Activity Center
Construction of the long awaited and much needed activity center at Linn State
Technical College is complete. Although the 71,420 square foot facility was
primarily built for student use, it is also available to the public on a
membership and user fee basis. It is believed few, if any, communities the size
of Osage County will have such an asset that contributes to the overall quality
of life of community residents.
At the heart of this extraordinary facility are three regulation sized gymnasium
floors. Individually, the floors consist of three fully functioning basketball
courts complete with their own goals, scoreboards and bleachers. The college
plans to utilize the individual gym floors for student intramurals.
Collectively, the floors function as a large auditorium. College functions
such as job fairs, family and alumni weekends, SkillsUSA and commencement will
now be held in the new facility. Besides college functions, the building will
also be available for trade shows, sporting events and other community related
events.
In
addition to rentable space, the activity center will provide ample opportunities
for individuals to stay physically fit. The facility boasts a fitness center
complete with state-of-the art cardiovascular equipment, weight machines and
free weights.
In
addition to the fitness center, the gymnasium floors are surrounded by an
elevated, three-lane walking/running track. Other major components of the
activity center include locker rooms, short order food service and a game area.
The
basement of the facility will be used as a safe shelter. The safe shelter was
funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and will accommodate
2500 people in an emergency situation such as a tornado. Future plans for the
basement include classroom and conference room space, as well as an indoor
archery range.
The project was funded
through a grant from FEMA, capital dollars set aside as directed by the Board of
Regents, private gifts, and the greatest portion is through bond sales to be
retired through user fees. The project did not receive state funds. In order to
honor those contributing private gifts a schedule of naming opportunities has
been developed with a variety of recognition levels.
