LSTC Students Rebuild Hughes Helicopter
2006-2007

The Hughes TH-55A helicopter displayed here was reconditioned and reassembled by Linn State Technical College Aviation students.  Both first and second year students worked on the project after classes and on their own time.

Students devoted many hours to the reconstruction of the vintage helicopter.  They logged approximately 400 hours working on the machine, which will be used in maintenance training in the Aviation program.

Estimated value of the early 1960s helicopter is $65,000.  Aviation Department Chair, Bill Hopper, says this type of aircraft could be used for pilot training and agricultural work such as crop spraying, crop pollination, and frost patrol—circulating air over fruit and vegetable crops to stave off frost kill.

The students will be using the helicopter for lab maintenance training during the fall 2007 semester and later semesters as well.
