Welcome to Linn State Technical College
The
purpose and objective of the Caterpillar Dealer Service Technician Program is to
prepare candidates for entry level positions in Caterpillar dealerships as
service technicians. Students who complete the program will have the appropriate
skills in Caterpillar products, systems, and technologies to assure their
success as a Dealer Service Technician.
The Dealer Support Department of Caterpillar
developed the Dealer Service Technician Program. The program requires a
partnership between Caterpillar, Caterpillar Dealers, and selected colleges. The
program also requires a commitment by all three partners to assure program
success. Caterpillar retains ownership of all curriculum materials and
determines where and how these materials will be used.
The Caterpillar Dealer Service Technician Program
is a two-year program culminating in an Associate of Applied Science degree. The
Caterpillar Dealer Service Technician curriculum consists of five semesters and
operates on an eight-week block pattern. Typically, a college semester is 16-
weeks long. However, the Caterpillar Dealer Service Technician program breaks
each semester into eight-week blocks. The first eight-weeks are spent in the
classroom and laboratory, followed by eight-weeks of paid internship. The summer
between the two years, the student is required to complete general education
courses required of all Associate of Applied Science degree candidates. The
curriculum is dedicated as Caterpillar specific and is differentiated from other
industry-wide programs offered at the college. The paid internships allow the
student to quickly apply what they have learned in the classroom while earning
money to pay for the incidental fees, books, and tools required by the program.
Financial aid is also available.
