Accredited Dental Assisting Programs

State of Missouri

To perform expanded functions under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist in the state of Missouri, an expanded-functions dental assistant must hold an expanded functions permit issued by the Missouri Dental Board. To earn the expanded functions permit, one must:

1. Complete one of the following:

A. Hold Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification and graduate from a CODA-accredited dental assisting program in which competency testing in the appropriate expanded functions category* was completed, OR

B. Hold DANB CDA certification and complete a Missouri Dental Board-approved expanded functions training course, OR

C. Pass the Missouri Basic Skills Mastery Exam (BSME) (administered by DANB or another Missouri Dental Board-approved provider) and complete a Missouri Dental Board-approved expanded functions training course

AND

2. Hold current certification in the American Heart Associations Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS), or an equivalent certification approved by the Missouri Dental Board

AND

3. Submit proof of meeting expanded functions course requirements along with application form and established fee to the Missouri Dental Board

*Expanded functions permits are issued in five categories: Direct Restorative I, Direct Restorative II, Orthodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics, and Removable Prosthodontics.

Linn State Technical College is an Accredited Expanded Function Facility for the Missouri Dental Association (MDA).

Expanded function certification informs an employer that you have completed Missouri Dental Board approved courses, which show your ability to be clinically competent in the specific functions.

Linn State Technical College offers Orthodontics, Direct Restorative I, Removable Prosthetics, and Fixed Prosthetics expanded function at the Nichols Career Center campus in Jefferson City. Testing is performed online and in an on-site clinical setting. You must send a copy of your original Missouri Basic Skills Mastery Exam Certificate or CDA Certificate with your registration.

To become certified, you must successfully complete your prerequisite exams one week prior to attending the hands-on, clinical course. The written exams will be provided through the online coursework and you must complete them independently.

Expanded Function Course Offerings

Hybrid - Orthodontic Expanded Function
This course will train students through an online didactic course along with an on-site clinical setting. Students will be clinically competent in the following functions: preliminary bending of archwire; removal of orthodontic bands and bonds; final cementation of any permanent appliance or prosthesis; making impressions for the fabrication of any removable or fixed prosthesis/appliance; and placement and cementation of orthodontic brackets and/or bands.

Hybrid class materials will be accessed online prior to the on-site clinical setting course. The on-site clinical settings will have trainers that will teach the skills to the assistant, who will then be assessed and must show competency to the board certified orthodontist in order to receive the certificate of completion.

Hybrid Direct Restorative I Expanded Function
This course will train students through an online didactic course along with an on-site clinical setting. Students will be clinically competent in the following functions: sizing and cementing of prefabricated crowns; placing, condensing, and carving amalgam for Class I, V, and VI restoratives; placing composite for Class I, V, and VI restorations; and minor palliative care of dental emergencies (place sedative fillings).

Hybrid class materials will be accessed online prior to the on-site clinical setting course. The on-site clinical settings will have trainers that will teach the skills to the assistant, who will then be assessed and must show competency to the board certified dentist in order to receive the certificate of completion.

Hybrid Removable Prosthetics Expanded Function
This course will train students through an online didactic course along with an on-site clinical setting. Students will be clinically competent in the following functions: placement of temporary soft liners in a removable prosthesis; extra-oral adjustments of removable prosthesis during and after insertion; minor palliative care of dental emergencies (place sedative filling); and making impressions for the fabrication of any removable or fixed prosthesis/appliance.

Hybrid class materials will be accessed online prior to the on-site clinical setting course. The on-site clinical settings will have trainers that will teach the skills to the assistant, who will then be assessed and must show competency to the board certified dentist in order to receive the certificate of completion.

Hybrid Fixed Prosthetics Expanded Function
This course will train students through an online didactic course along with an on-site clinical setting. Students will be clinically competent in the following functions: place retraction cord in preparation for fixed prosthodontic impressions; extra-oral adjustments of fixed prosthesis; extra-oral adjustments of removable prosthesis during and after insertion; final cementation of any permanent appliance or prosthesis; and making impressions for the fabrication of any removable or fixed prosthesis/appliance.

Hybrid class materials will be accessed online prior to the on-site clinical setting course. The on-site clinical settings will have trainers that will teach the skills to the assistant, who will then be assessed and must show competency to the board certified dentist in order to receive the certificate of completion.

You MUST send a copy of your Missouri Basic Skills Mastery Exam Certificate or CDA Certificate with your registration. A COA Certificate will be accepted for the orthodontic course.

Class minimum is 10; classes with insufficient enrollment may be canceled. We will inform you of the cancellation at least 7 calendar days in advance. You will be moved into the next available class and emailed a new confirmation.

Cancellation Policies

No refunds are given for any reason.

Weather Cancellation Policy

Classes are not normally cancelled except due to inclement weather. If inclement weather is expected, please check the LSTC website for a cancellation notice or call Linn State Technical College Dental Assisting Technology program at 573-659-3110. Cancellation notices will be posted by 6:00am the day of the on-site clinical setting class.

Things to complete one week prior to your on-site clinical setting course:

  • Required pre-work completed through online modules that may include the following:
    • A separate module for each of the expanded functions being taught
    • Presentation slides, comprised of text, photos, illustrations and instructional videos
    • Accompanying online practice quiz for each module
    • Outline and Skills Standards (PDF) of the online instruction
    • Prerequisite Written Exam (Restorative and Removable Prosthetics only)
