Do You Know?
-
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students.
-
Untreated depression is the number one cause of suicide for college student suicides (and all suicides).
-
Studies indicate that college students who are suicidal are quiet, reserved, depressed and socially isolated; thus it is up to all of us to try to identify the suicide warning signs and get help for them.
-
Additionally, a survey indicates that one in five college students (25%) believe that their depression level is higher than it should be; yet only 6% say that they would seek help.
-
If you are embarrassed/afraid to see or admit that your student needs help; he/she will not admit it or seek help either.
Would You?
-
Want, ask for or welcome outside help from the College or other agencies?
-
Recognize warning signs in your student?
-
Notify the student’s college of potential signs/problems?
-
Want the college to notify you of any potential signs/problems?
-
Try to get your student help, while giving him/her as much reassurance, love, concern and compassion as possible?
- Treat this as an illness and do anything you could to get your student help?
- Be afraid to voice your opinion to help reduce the stigma of mental health and suicide for fear of what others might think of you.
