Linn State holds commencement
On Saturday, Linn State Technical College hosted two commencement ceremonies for 480 graduation candidates.
Linn State alumnus, Tom Graves, a 1979 Electronics Technology graduate, gave the keynote address at both ceremonies in the presence of another record number of students participating in commencement exercises.
Graves shared with the students his experiences working as a technician for Explorer Pipeline for over three decades. In his address, Graves encouraged the class of 2011 to be prepared for the unplanned learning experiences that life offers after graduation. “You came to college in the first place, because you didn’t know very much,” said Graves. “Now you know a little more. The key is to keep building on it.”
For more than 32 years, Graves has been building on the education and training he received from Linn State. Immediately following graduation, Graves moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where he began his employment with the pipeline as an electronics repair technician. Graves has steadily moved up the ranks of the company and today is the area manager of the Glenpool area which reaches from Southern Oklahoma to Springfield, Missouri.
During the commencement ceremonies, Ben Williams of Bucklin, Missouri received the President’s Award. Williams, an Electrical Distribution Systems graduate, was on the Dean’s List; a resident assistant; a member of the Residential Government Association, Career Ready Club and a member of Phi Theta Kappa; and President of the Student Government Association.
In addition to his service to the college, Williams also logged in over 170 hours of volunteer hours for the college and the community. “I always wanted to be a lineman so that’s why I came to Linn,” said Williams. “I also wanted to make the most of my time while I was here and maybe even make some lifelong friends.” According to Williams, he leaves Linn State having accomplished his goals.
With more than 35 programs, Linn State Technical College is Missouri’s only public two-year technical college with a statewide mission. LSTC prepares students for profitable employment and a life of learning. LSTC has three locations in Linn, Mexico and Jefferson City.
